Age-dependent association of pulse wave velocity with coronary artery disease and myocardial aging in high-risk patients

Abstract: Aims Progressive arterial stiffening, as a marker of arterial aging, may reach a plateau in elderly patients and may thus lose its clinical utility. This phenomenon may be more prominent in high-risk patients. We aimed to investigate if carotid-to-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV) is related to coronary artery disease (CAD) and diastolic dysfunction in elderly high-risk patients as compared to a control group of younger individuals. Methods One-hundr… Show more

“…Similarly, a meta-analysis of 17 635 participants showed a decrease in the association between baPWV and future CVD events when participants were stratified according to hypertension [32]. Georgiopoulos et al [33] also found that baPWV lacked clinical value in elderly individuals with a high cardiovascular risk. Taken together, these results suggest that baPWV is not a suitable marker of MACE risk stratification in patients with stable CAD and hypertension.…”

“…Arterial stiffness (carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity, cfPWV) and PWRs were measured using validated devices as previously described (Complior, Artech-Medical, Paris, France; Sphygmocor, AtCor, Sydney, Australia) [4,24]. In brief, blood pressure (BP) measurements were obtained from each patient 1 min apart using oscillometry with an automated BP device (Omron; Omron HealthCare Inc, Lake Forest, Illinois, USA) and then cfPWV was measured in the supine position.…”

“…In patients with a high risk for cardiovascular disease, an age-dependent association between arteriosclerosis with coronary artery disease (CAD) and diastolic dysfunction has been shown. 3 Arteriosclerosis is the basis of cardiocerebrovascular diseases, and its presence is not only predictive of the occurrence and development of cardiocerebrovascular disease but also useful in evaluating their severity and predicting prognosis. 4,5 Therefore, the identification of risk factors related to early arteriosclerosis is important for the development of strategies to not only treat but also prevent cardiocerebrovascular diseases.…”
