Population studies on normal and dysfunctional characteristics of menstrual cycles are scarce for western populations and practically non-existent for non-western ones. Recent data suggest that the type of menstrual cycle can be relevant for later gynaecological problems in several ways. The type of menstrual cycle is related to menarcheal age in a way that those with early maturation show more menstrual disorders which are the largest diagnosis category accounting for hysterectomies in adult women. On the other hand menstrual pain is often cited as the main single cause of school absenteeism among adolescent girls. The aim of this study is to describe characteristics of menstrual cycles, prevalence of main dysfunctions and their relationship to the age of maturity. The sample comprises 495 adolescent girls from Marrakech (Morocco) aged 12-19 years. At 13 years, 40% of these girls had reached menarche. The median age at menarche is 13.04. The prevalences of abdominal pain, premenstrual symptoms and irregularity are 69.60, 51.20 and 23.03 respectively. Abdominal pain is significantly more frequent in girls with early menarche.

Le présent travail a pour but de déterminer l'âge médian à la ménopause et la prévalence des symptômes du climatère dans un échantillon de femmes marocaines. L'échantillon, constitué dans la ville de Marrakech, est de 571 femmes âgées entre 39 et 61 ans. L'âge médian à la ménopause naturelle, estimé par la méthode du statu quo et déterminé par l'analyse des probits, est de 50,25 ± 6,5 ans. En comparaison avec d'autres études, l'âge médian trouvé à Marrakech apparaît des plus tardifs. Il est significativement supérieur à ceux trouvés dans la ville de Rabat et dans la région de Marrakech. La discussion de ce résultat insiste sur les différences entre les méthodologies utilisées dans les différentes études et s'interroge sur la possibilité d'une augmentation de cet âge en relation avec l'amélioration des conditions de vie en milieu urbain marocain.Quant à l'analyse des symptômes du climatère, il ressort de l'enquête que les principaux symptômes rapportés par les femmes de Marrakech sont les douleurs d'articulation (près de 90 %), les céphalées (près de 86 %) et la fatigue (près de 83 %). Ils sont suivis de bouffées de chaleur et de problèmes de sexualité pour respectivement 73 % et 72 % des femmes. Ces pourcentages sont relativement élevés par rapport à ce qui est rapporté par les femmes de Rabat. Les caractéristiques reproductives des femmes de Marrakech (femmes au foyer, âge au mariage précoce et nombre de parité élevé) sont peut-être à l'origine de tels résultats.
