Age and Liver Transplantation

Abstract: Although patient survival was significantly lower among liver transplant recipients above the age of 60 years, the excess mortality was due to nonhepatic, largely age-related problems. The overall success of liver transplantation and improvement in quality of life for older recipients is excellent.

“…2,9 This susceptibility to rejection reflects the fact that patients with PLD usually belong to a middle-aged group known to be more prone to rejection. 16 In addition, those patients usually do not have advanced liver failure or malnutrition, other factors that can affect the immune system and the incidence of rejection. Although relatively frequent, all rejection episodes that we encountered quickly responded to steroid treatment or conversion to FK506.…”

“…In our study, atherosclerotic disease was present in six patients (5.2%) whose mean age was 54 years. The incidence of this complication increases with the liver transplant patient's age [34]. In our series, 53.4% of the patients were < 55 years, which could explain the low prevalence of cardiovascular events.…”
