Age and growth of flathead, Platycephalus indicus from the Persian Gulf (Bandar Abbas, Iran)

Abstract: In a study of the age and growth of Platycephalus indicus, a total of 1106 fish were collected from May 2011 to March 2012 in the coastal waters of Iran, Persian Gulf. The ages of 279 specimens were determined by sectioned otoliths. The ages of the females were estimated to be between 0+ to 7+ , while the ages of the males were from 0+ to 4+. The von Bertalanffy growth curve was well suited to the age/total length data of males and females as follows: Lt = 43.40{1–exp[−0.45(t + 0.328)]} for males, and Lt = 63 … Show more

“…The present Z and M values are lower than those obtained by (Hashemi et al, 2014) (Z= 2.59, M= 0.77 and F= 1.28 yr -1 ) for the same species in Northwest of Persian Gulf, Iran and Mohammadikia et al (2014) who estimated total mortality (Z) of P. indicus from the Persian Gulf, Iran as 1.62 yr -1 for males and 1.43 yr -1 for females, and estimated natural mortality (M) as M = 0.736 yr -1 for males and 0.886 yr -1 for females. Also, they calculated fishing mortality (F) as 0.884 for males and 0.544 for females.…”

“…The von Bertalanffy equation was fitted to calculate the length-at-age curve by using the non-linear squares estimation method (Pauly et al , 1992). The von Bertalanffy function can be described by the following equation (Mohammadikia et al , 2014): …”

“…As for event 6 (February 2017), the abundance was lower and that could be due to our sampling method or the spawning of another species of Platycephalidae family. However, for instance, the highest GSI values for both sexes of P. indicus were observed in January (late winter), while the lowest GSI values were observed in May (early summer) in the southeastern coast of the Arabian Gulf at Bandar Abbas in Iran near the Strait of Hurmuz (Mohammadikia et al, 2014). Further investigation in terms of various adult platycephalids spawning periods is needed to compare with their planktonic stages in the vicinity of Umm Al-Namil Island and in Kuwait waters in general.…”
