This was a descriptive, correlational study designed to evaluate the capacity to direct attention (CDA) of the nurse and to verify an association between the CDA and attention demand situations. For data collection the instruments used were: the Attentional Function Index and the Directed Attention Demands. The participants were 169 nurses of a teaching hospital in the State of São Paulo. The mean perception of performance or CDA was 60.4 which differed between the variables: unit of work (p=0.013), work hours (p=0.044), presence of health problems (p=0.026) and problems of a psychological nature (p=0.005).There was a negative association between the situations of demand and CDA (r = -0.294, p<0.0001). It was concluded that nurses showed good CDA, which was related to some professional and demographic variables, and the higher the attentional demands, the lower the CDA. Demandas de atención en el ambiente de trabajo y la capacidad del enfermero de dirigir su atenciónSe trata de un estudio descriptivo y correlacional que tuvo por objetivo evaluar la capacidad que tiene el enfermero de dirigir su atención (CDA) y verificar se hay asociación entre CDA y situaciones de demanda de atención. Para la recolección de datos se utilizó los instrumentos: Attentional Function Index y Demandas de Atención.Participaron del estudio 169 enfermeros de un hospital de enseñanza del interior del estado de Sao Paulo. El promedio de la percepción de desempeño (CDA) fue de 60,4 y tuvo resultados diferentes entre las variables: unidad de trabajo (p=0,013); carga horaria (p=0,044); presencia de algún problema de salud (p=0,026) y problema de orden psicológico (p=0,005). Existe una asociación negativa entre las situaciones de demanda y CDA (r=-0,294; p<0,0001). Se concluye que los enfermeros presentaron buena CDA, la cual es influenciada por aspectos demográficos y profesionales y que cuanto más grandes son las situaciones de demanda de atención, menor es la CDA.

AbrégéLa pertinence du soutien affectif et informationnel à l'intention des femmes vivant avec le cancer du sein est bien documentée. On reconnaît, en général, que les stratégies visant à répondre aux besoins des femmes dans ces domaines représentent une composante essentielle d'un programme intégré de lutte contre le cancer du sein (Santé Canada, 1994; Olivotto, Gelmon et Kuusk, 1996;Williams, O'Sullivan, Snodgrass et Love, 1995). En revanche, le soutien pratique figure rarement dans les écrits, et est le plus souvent absent de la programmation des soins de santé. Il en ressort, pour les défenseurs des intérêts des patientes atteintes de cancer du sein, que le soutien pratique pourrait représenter un besoin critique non satisfait chez un nombre important de femmes (Batt, 1994; Santé Canada, 1994).Une recension des écrits confirme la place importante occupée par le soutien affectif et informationnel à titre de problèmes éveillant l'intérêt des chercheurs. Les recherches qui s'appuient sur des méthodes qualitatives ou descriptives pour développer les connaissances fondées sur la perspective des femmes documentent elles-mêmes l'importance qu'il y a de tenir compte de leurs inquiétudes et de leurs besoins en matière d'information. Bien que l'on mentionne brièvement le soutien pratique ou physique en tant que problème additionnel, il est rare qu'on l'explore en détail. Et il est difficile de savoir pourquoi. On suppose peut-être que le soutien pratique est du ressort de la famille, plutôt qu'une préoccupation fondamentale du système de soins. Ou bien cela peut venir du fait que le soutien affectif et informationnel est considéré comme étant normal tandis que les besoins pratiques sont absents du discours général concernant le cancer du sein ou qu'ils y revêtent une importance minime.Cette étude concrétise les efforts d'un groupe communautaire qui, dans un mouvement de sa base, a commencé à cerner le problème du soutien pratique chez les femmes atteintes de cancer du sein. Avec en mémoire leur propre vécu du cancer du sein et le défi de taille qu'avait représenté le soutien pratique, des membres du projet Life Quilt for Breast Cancer, à Vancouver, ont tenté de documenter la nature du besoin afin que l'on comprenne mieux les lacunes qui pouvaient exister au sein des services et ressources de santé. Cet article présente les résultats de l'enquête préliminaire sur les besoins relatifs au soutien pratique, depuis la perspective de femmes qui ont dû faire face aux immenses défis associés au cancer du sein.

Because childbearing women function in multiple roles, the capacity to focus or concentrate is an important resource while preparing for birth and parenting. In addition to daily tasks that require mental effort, gravidas have psychosocial demands related to pregnancy. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the psychosocial tasks of pregnancy and the capacity to focus or direct attention. A convenience sample of 57 pregnant women in their third trimester was recruited from prenatal education classes to participate in this descriptive correlational study. After other variables thought to influence attentional functioning were considered, women experiencing the greatest conflict in psychosocial tasks had the most difficulty using directed attention and more negatively evaluated their attentional functioning. In order to empower gravidas to participate in their health care, it is important for researchers and practitioners to understand and support directed attentional functioning, an important area for nursing care and research.
