Age-adjusted plasma D-Dimer levels in suspected acute pulmonary embolism – a retrospective, single center study

Abstract: INTRODUCTION The conventional D dimer threshold (CDD) is characterized by high sensitivity and low specificity in diagnosing acute pulmonary embolism (PE) in older patients. A higher cut off level for D dimer has been proposed, aiming at increasing the specificity while maintaining high sensitivity. It is calculated by multiplying the patient's age in years by a coefficient of 10 (YADD10). OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to validate the clinical value of YADD10 in patients with suspected acute PE and to o… Show more

“…The diagnostic value of D-dimer in APE has long been recognized. [10] The elevated plasma D-dimer level indicates the increase in the burden of pulmonary arterial thrombosis and the incidence of complications. B-type brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) indicates the failure of the compensation of the right ventricle and suggests an increased risk of hemodynamic instability.…”

“…1 Recently, a new approach to DD levels in the diagnosis of APE has been proposed, which bases on the adjustment of the cutoff value to the patients’ age. 2,3 Moreover, the usefulness of DD measurement extends beyond diagnostic workup. d -dimer levels reflected thrombus burden in APE.…”
