Adults usually suspect teenagers not to care about their online privacy, although it has been shown that they manage privacy settings more frequently. Actually, adolescents develop a strategic management of privacy in order to translate it to social prestige. This article empirically shows how they rely on strong ties and get advantage on their online privacy in order to produce social and symbolic capital, namely, to show to peers that they grew out of childhood. It also shows that this production relies on a subtle balance between the public and private spheres. Indeed, they must conduct a representation of their private life on a public sphere in order to convince peers, who serve as an authority of legitimation, that they have an exclusive privacy.

O presente artigo busca refletir sobre estratégias que jovens universitários brasileiros utilizam na regulação de suas interações mediadas por smartphones. A partir de um estudo qualitativo exploratório, faz análise temática dos relatos sobre as avaliações que fazem do uso constante dos aparelhos, da conexão permanente e da exposição do self nas interações sociais mediadas. Tanto na dimensão informacional como na relacional, os jovens apontam a necessidade de regulação dos graus de envolvimento com o próprio dispositivo e reconhecem algumas implicações desta regulação nos graus de envolvimento com as demais pessoas e com as informações ao redor. Há uma intensa ambivalência nas avaliações que os jovens fazem das experiências de conexão constante, sinalizando ajustes na regulação da privacidade e nas dinâmicas interacionais a partir dos usos e apropriações singulares dos smartphones.
