“…The structures of a number of 1D, 2D and 3D μ-sulfito-metal coordination polymers have been reported. Among these are electrically neutral chains and networks, some containing only metal and sulfite as in the “binary” metal sulfites M a (SO 3 ) b , whereas in others, neutral coligands such as H 2 O, NH 3 and N-heterocycles are also bonded to the metal; there are also a few examples of anionic [M x (SO 3 ) y ] z − arrangements . In the present report, we describe the very simple generation of the Cu I (SO 3 ) 4 7− ion, in which the metal center is in a tetrahedral environment of four sulfur donors, and demonstrate that it provides a versatile building block for the construction of mixed metal 1D, 2D and 3D coordination polymers.…”
