Bottom-up Content Convergence Phenomena in Socialist Cultural Economies: The Case of Premodern Story Universes of Romanian Film and Music

“…Romania; however, its method and findings may help scholars to investigate other eastern european socialist cultures. Continuing our previous research, 1 the present study shows that content convergence in a socialist cultural economy such as Romania's existed not only as a top-down, policy-driven phenomenon but also as a bottom-up process, triggered by competition, independent artistic choices, and consumer demand-phenomena more specific to capitalist economies. Our case study also reveals that top-down and bottom-up convergence phenomena did not exist in an antagonistic relation-in terms of power and resistance, and propaganda and its deconstruction.…”
