African swine fever vaccine: Turning a dream into reality

Abstract: African swine fever (ASF) is currently threatening the swine industry at a global level. The disease originated in Africa has spread to Europe, Asia and Oceania, since 2007, reaching a pandemic dimension. Currently, the spread of ASF is unstoppable and that the development of a safe and effective vaccine is urgently required. The objective of this paper is to review the vaccine candidates tested during the 20th and 21st centuries, to identify the strengths and weaknesses of these studies and to highlight what … Show more

“…This is, in itself, still debatable because numbers of IFNγ-producing cells or IFNγ levels did not correlate with survival of challenge infections in several studies [18,47,128,129]. Since potential vaccines against ASFV have been extensively reviewed by Muñoz-Pérez and colleagues recently [130], we will focus on candidates that elicited a T cell response in this chapter.…”

“…ASF vaccine development has proved to be one of the top priorities in ASF research, and the most promising strategy would appear to be live attenuated vaccines (Muñoz-Pérez et al, 2021). Understanding the genetic basis for ASFV spread and adaptation among hosts will facilitate vaccine development (Bao et al, 2021).…”

“…These practices have led to the circulation of low-virulence strains in China and have facilitated the presence of animals with chronic forms and persistent infections [22,23]. Far from helping, this situation is posing a great obstacle to the early detection of the disease and its subsequent control and eradication [24]. The emergence of the aforementioned less virulent viruses increases the relevance of biosecurity measures in destination countries, such as appropriate quarantines of the live pigs imported for the early detection of chronic forms of ASF.…”
