African Swine Fever Outbreak at a Farm in Central Namibia

Abstract: An outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) occurred at a farm in central Namibia in March 2018. Fourteen pigs died out of a herd of 59 animals over a period of 16 days between the first and sixteenth of March 2018. The clinical signs observed included sternal recumbency, fever, weakness, pain and reluctance to move, hyperemia of the skin and anorexia, followed by death. Necropsy findings included large amounts of unclotted blood in the pleural and peritoneal cavities, diffuse carcass congestion, splenomegaly, co… Show more

“…At day 7 pi viral antigen was found abundantly in wild boar, but only minimally in domestic pigs, again indicating an impaired virus elimination in wild boar. Pneumonia is described in domestic pigs after field and experimental infection [35,36] and can be either associated with ASF or secondary infections [37]. Supporting the histopathologic findings, flow cytometry of T cell subsets in lung tissue showed an immune response mainly driven by CD8α + αβ T cells and CD2 + /CD8α -activated γδ T cells.…”

“…In Namibia, a large proportion of outbreaks of ASF in pigs are suspected to be related to direct or indirect contacts with warthogs and from transmission originating from the sylvatic cycle [ 68 , 69 , 70 , 71 ], as has been described in other Southern African countries. Initial typing efforts which confirmed genotype I in warthogs [ 47 ] and in domestic pig outbreaks in Windhoek in 1989 [ 65 ] appeared to support this.…”
