Aflatoxin levels in sunflower seeds and cakes collected from micro- and small-scale sunflower oil processors in Tanzania

Abstract: Aflatoxin, a mycotoxin found commonly in maize and peanuts worldwide, is associated with liver cancer, acute toxicosis, and growth impairment in humans and animals. In Tanzania, sunflower seeds are a source of snacks, cooking oil, and animal feed. These seeds are a potential source of aflatoxin contamination. However, reports on aflatoxin contamination in sunflower seeds and cakes are scarce. The objective of the current study was to determine total aflatoxin concentrations in sunflower seeds and cakes from sm… Show more

“…However, the extent to which feed ingredients are processed prior to the feed production process also influences the mycotoxin contamination levels. For example, Mmongoyo et al (2017) illustrated that generally more cake samples were contaminated with aflatoxin than whole sunflower seeds. This was thought to be caused by the small number of seeds that may have shown aflatoxin contamination within the entire batch.…”

“…All these studies were conducted in the general population, while others examined cancer patients' understanding of the causes of their cancer, unveiling beliefs in curses or witchcraft [24,25]. In terms of cancer risk factors, studies have focused on awareness of tobacco, STDs, HIV, alcohol consumption [26,27], and presence of high levels of aflatoxin food contamination [28][29][30]. None of these studies jointly addressed awareness of multiple cancer risk factors in the population, yet this overall risk is most relevant for an allencompassing cancer control plan.…”

“…The Tanzanian researchers documented how sunflower seeds and their by-products are also at risk. There is a need to better understand the contamination of sunflower seeds and cakes related to the average consumption of sunflower seed products by humans and animals [15]. A study on sugarcane and its secondary products in Egypt detected multiple mycotoxins even when processed into juice [16].…”
