Afferent connections of gudden's tegmental nuclei in the rabbit

Abstract: The regions projecting to Gudden's tegmental nuclei were examined by retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase or wheat-germ-agglutinin-conjugated horseradish peroxidase. Gudden's tegmental nuclei in the rabbit can be divided into a pars principalis of the ventral tegmental nucleus (TVP), a pars ventralis of the dorsal tegmental nucleus (TDV), and a pars dorsalis of the dorsal tegmental nucleus (TDD). The TVP receives many fibers from the medial division of the ipsilateral medial mammillary nucleus and bi… Show more

“…1990), the superior colliculus (Stechison et al 1985), the pretectal nucleus, and the interstitial nucleus of Cajal by way of the fasciculus longitudinalis medialis (McCrea and Baker 1985). They also send fibers to the fasciculus longitudinalis dorsalis and terminate in the dorsal tegmental nucleus (Hayakawa and Zyo 1985). A few distinct labeled fibers and terminals were observed in the dorsal part of the SUM when PHA-L was injected into the C3 region in the present study.…”

“…Although it is possible that IPN lesions may have disrupted any one of these processes, we suggest that the structure is at least involved in conveying motor related signals to HD cell circuitry (Sharp et al, 2006), likely through its reciprocal relationship with the DTN and its connections with the lateral habenula, which also projects to the DTN (Fig. 1) (Contestabile & Flumerfelt, 1981; Liu et al, 1984; Groenewegen et al, 1986; Hayakawa & Zho, 1985). Lateral habenula neurons are sensitive to running speed and angular head velocity (Sharp et al, 2006), suggesting that information about self-movements is also generated in this structure.…”

“…The DTN receives ascending input from the vestibular pathway including the NPH and SGN (Hayakawa and Zyo, 1985; Liu et al, 1984; Biazoli et al, 2006; Groenewegen and Van Dijk, 1984; McCrea and Baker, 1985). Moreover, the medial vestibular nuclei are interconnected with the NPH (McCrea and Horn, 2006; Horowitz et al, 2005) and also project to the SGN (Biazoli et al, 2006).…”
