Afferent and efferent projections of the VIIIth cranial nerve in the lamprey Lampetra japonica

Abstract: Anterograde and retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase was used to examine the afferent and efferent projections of the VIIIth cranial nerve in the lamprey Lampetra japonica. Ganglion cells of the VIIIth nerve are classified into three types on the basis of their morphology. The central processes of these ganglion cells enter the medulla in two groups: the anterior group (mostly thick fibers) and the posterior group (mostly thin fibers). Afferent fibers mainly terminate within the ipsilateral ventral a… Show more

“…The dorsal and medial nuclei receive electroreceptive and mechanoreceptive primary afferents from the lateral line, respectively [Kishida et al, 1980;Fritzsch et al, 1984;Ronan and Northcutt, 1987;Ronan, 1988;Koyama et al, 1990;González and Anadón, 1992]. The distribution of primary vestibular afferents in the ventral nucleus has been shown experimentally in both larval and adult lampreys [Rubinson, 1974;Northcutt, 1979;Koyama et al, 1989;González and Anadón, 1994;Pflieger and Dubuc, 2000]. In addition, some dorsal column fibers were observed in close apposition with cells of the intermediate octavomotor nucleus [Dubuc et al, 1993].…”

“…For the rhombencephalon, we have followed Nieuwenhuys (1977), Koyama et al (1989), and Ronan and Northcutt (1990). The subdivisions of the spinal cord are modified from Van Dongen et al (1985).…”

“…The RS neurons receive vestibular input through interneurons of vestibular nuclei (Koyama et al 1989;Northcutt 1979;Rovainen 1979). They also receive input from other sensory systems, from the forebrain, from different centers in the brain stem, and from the spinal cord Dubuc et al 1993;Rovainen 1967Rovainen , 1979Viana Di Prisco et al 1995;Wickelgren 1977).…”
