“…These areas have been linked with empathy and relating to another person’s negative emotion or pain ( Ziaei et al, 2021 ; Nummenmaa et al, 2008 ; Bufalari et al, 2007 ). We speculate that higher segregation of these areas and consequent reduced signaling from them may indicate older adults’ difficulty reading and processing negative affect in others ( Mill et al, 2009 ; Hayes et al, 2020 ; Stutesman and Frye, 2023 ). Taken together, the increased integration of nodes in MAG1 that are mostly associated with emotional control or cognitive control tasks ( Friedman & Robbins, 2022 ; Koch et al, 2018 ) with the decreased integration of nodes in MAG4 that are associated with empathy and relating to others ( Arioli et al, 2021 ; Braadbaart et al, 2014 ) could reflect that emotion processing in older adults relies more on crystalline aspects of cognition like knowledge about oneself and the world, a process that has previously been described in the cognitive domain as the crystallization of cognition (for review see Spreng and Turner, 2019 ) and has also been suggested to affect the sociocognitive domain (Henry et al 2022).…”
