Affective symptoms and quality of life in patients with voiding or storage dysfunction: Results before and after sacral neuromodulation: A prospective follow‐up study

Abstract: QoL and affective symptoms can significantly improve in LUTS patients who are successfully treated with SNM. When divided per indication, a significant improvement in affective symptoms together with QoL was only reported in successful OAB patients and not in successfully treated NOR patients.

“…This model is supported by data showing that neuromodulation, a centrally acting therapy impacting perceptual processes, improves affective function in those patients who experience relief of urinary disorders. 26 The concept might also be extended to pelvic floor/genitourinary functional disorders in general.…”

“…This is in contrast to other reports that found improvements in self-reported sleep after SNM implantation. Jairam et al [12] found that sleep was significantly improved following SNM implantation for OAB (n=36) using the Dutch OAB-q. Likewise, Noblett et al [13] found persistent improvement in self-reported sleep using the same questionnaire at 12 months following SNM implantation compared to baseline scores in 255 subjects followed prospectively for Sleep disturbance after sacral neuromodulation treatment of OAB.…”

“…Treatment with advanced therapies such as sacral neuromodulation (SNM) have been shown to decrease nighttime voiding symptoms [11] and have been related to sleep improvement when measured using disease-specific healthrelated quality of life measures [12,13].…”

“…This is consistent with a long-term retrospective study (median follow-up of 9.7 years) performed by Ismail et al [43], where the overall improvement was found in 63% of the participants. Jairam et al [40] evaluated the impact of SNM on quality of life. They observed a significant decrease in depressive symptoms and a substantial increase in the Health-Related Quality of Life Score (HRQL), including the coping, concern, sleep, and social subscales in good SNM responders.…”
