Depression is associated with altered processing of emotional stimuli, often detected by changes in late positive potential (LPP) features. However, evidence on LPP amplitude and latency in individuals with depressive symptoms shows inconsistencies. These may stem from the heterogeneity inherent to depressive conditions, which were primarily investigated in terms of symptoms severity. Somatic and cognitive-affective symptoms, to our knowledge, have not been properly accounted for. 66 individuals with absent to severe depressive symptoms were presented with emotional pictures (pleasant, neutral, and unpleasant) while the electroencephalographic signal was recorded from a 32-channel cap. Linear mixed models were performed on LPP's mean amplitude and fractional peak latency adding fixed effects of emotional condition, severity of somatic and cognitive-affective depressive symptoms, and their interactions. Random effects included subject and channel factors. Our findings show a differential effect of somatic and cognitive-affective depressive symptoms on LPP amplitude and latency. Higher cognitive-affective symptoms were associated with reduced LPP amplitude for both pleasant (b = − .53, p < .001) and unpleasant (b = − .24, p = .007) pictures, while higher somatic symptoms were linked to an increased LPP amplitude for pleasant (b = .19, p = .030) and unpleasant (b = .31, p < .001) stimuli. Shorter LPP latencies were associated with higher somatic depressive symptoms, specifically for neutral pictures (b = -25.33, p = .007). These findings suggest a differential impact of somatic and cognitive depressive symptoms on central indices reflecting the elaboration of emotional stimuli. Therefore, we argue that a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms governing emotional processing in depressive subjects should consider the specificity of individual symptoms.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a critical tool for neuroscience research on brain functioning, as well as clinical applications in neurological and psychiatric illnesses. Anti-Black racism is a substantial societal problem that affects the validity of EEG assessments, thereby undermining efforts in research and in medical practice. There are several barriers present in the process of recording EEG with Black individuals. This includes the physical qualities of Black hair; as well as the cultural and historical significance of Black hair, the features of Black hairstyles, and the discomfort that many Black individuals feel if their hair is touched. The potential impact of these barriers on the application of EEG is considerable, including concerns of individual discomfort, lack of generalizability, and misdiagnosis. Recommendations are proposed here to combat these barriers, including individual researchers who utilize EEG methods, funding agencies that support EEG research, and journal editors who publish EEG findings.

Executive Functions (EFs) correspond to a general construct of cognitive abilities aimed at optimizing problem-solving and regulating behaviour effectively and efficiently. The current consensus model of EFs comprises three components: working memory, inhibitory control and cognitive flexibility. The present study sought to evaluate differences in task performance assessing EFs when subjects are confronted with a social stress paradigm related to the 'white coat phenomenon'. It involved 40 Chilean university students, mean age 21.8 years, who were randomly assigned to one of two conditions: in the presence of social stress (treatment) or in the absence of social stress (control). The results showed a partial impact of the white coat phenomenon, with statistically significant differences at p ≤ .05, when comparing both conditions in relation to the tasks that evaluated inhibitory control and cognitive flexibility, with both tasks presenting a higher speed of response in the experimental condition of social stress, with the accuracy of the responses being unaffected. RESUMENLas Funciones Ejecutivas (FEs) corresponden a un constructo general de habilidades cognitivas orientadas a optimizar la resolución de problemas y regular la conducta de forma eficaz y eficiente. El modelo actual de FEs de mayor consenso comprende tres componentes: Memoria de trabajo, Control Inhibitorio y Flexibilidad Cognitiva. La presente investigación buscó evaluar las diferencias en el desempeño de tareas que evalúan FEs cuando los sujetos son enfrentados a una situación de estrés social relacionada al 'fenómeno del delantal blanco'. En ella participaron 40 estudiantes universitarios chilenos, con media de 21,8 años, quienes fueron asignados al azar a una de dos condiciones: en presencia de estrés social (tratamiento), o bien, en ausencia de estrés social (control). Los resultados mostraron un impacto parcial del fenómeno del delantal blanco, con diferencias estadísticamente significativas a nivel p ≤ .05, al comparar ambas condiciones en relación a las tareas que evaluaban Control Inhibitorio y Flexibilidad Cognitiva, presentando ambas tareas una mayor velocidad de respuesta en la condición experimental de estrés social, sin afectarse la precisión de las respuestas.
