Aetiology of femoral hernias revisited: bilateral femoral hernia in a young male (two cases)

Abstract: Bilateral femoral hernias are less common in men than in women and rare in young adults. Only one case of a bilateral femoral hernia in a young man has been reported in the literature before. Three main theories have been postulated for femoral hernias. The theory that they are an acquired disease is the most accepted due to the common occurrence of such hernias in multiparous women but the theory lacks enough evidence. We report two cases in young men. Anatomical variations in the femoral canal could be the p… Show more

“…Anatomical variations in individuals can predispose to the development of femoral hernia in the presence of acquired predisposing factors. In adults, multiparous and obese women aged over 50 years are predominately affected [ 19 ]. In the presented series, no patient suffered from predisposing etiological factors like chronic pulmonary disease or obesity, and only one girl had the previous inguinal hernia repair during the early childhood.…”

“…Seventeen studies included adult patients whereas six studies were on pediatric patients. Among the seventeen studies with adult patients 3 studies/cases were excluded as they reported on sporadic neurofibroma involving the bile ducts [ 5 7 ]. All three of these patients underwent successful resection of the sporadic neurofibroma.…”

“…The advantages are a lower recurrence, superior mesh fixation, lower post-op pain and shorter stay. 8 In high risk patients and Emergency, still open repair is preferred over laparoscopic repair, the conflict measures are there among surgeons. Our experience makes believe that even in high risk patients, laparoscopic repair can be taken with all preoperative preparations on mind.…”
