Aetiology, morphology and body composition of infants born small for gestational age

Abstract: Infants born small for gestational age (SGA) are a heterogeneous group. Both the timing and duration of the intrauterine insult determine the physical condition and body composition of the infant at birth. Infants with symmetrical intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) have a similar body composition at birth to weight‐matched infants born appropriate for gestational age. However, these infants are more likely to remain shorter and lighter than normal infants. In contrast, infants with asymmetrical IUGR have r… Show more

“…We have shown previously an increased activity of MVM LPL in placentas from pregnancies complicated by maternal insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) (27) associated with accelerated fetal growth and large fat depots (28) and a decreased activity in pregnancies delivering preterm fetuses with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), a condition typically characterized by reduced fetal fat depots (27,29). In the same study, we demonstrated increased placental L-FABP expression in gestational diabetes mellitus and IDDM (27).…”

“…But are SGA children 'normal'? They form a heterogeneous group [8] with various pathologic determinants [27]. Certain reports [15] have noted no apparent GH deficiency in SGA children, while others [28] have shown a reduced rate of GH secretion associated with an abnormal pattern of secretion and reduced levels of insulin-like factor I (IGF-I) and IGF-binding protein-3.…”

“…The children included in the study group all had a late-onset (mid-second -third trimester) IUGR. Diagnosis was verified clinically and/or by ultrasound, and all showed signs of the asymmetric type of IUGR (Lapillone, Peretti, Ho, & Salle, 1997). Leitner et al (2000) discerned that the majority of children in this study had suffered a (placental) vascular-induced growth restriction.…”
