Aetiological factors in vulvar dermatitis

Abstract: This study suggests that the main aetiological factor in vulvar dermatitis is an endogenous predisposition. Iron deficiency may also contribute, while contact with irritants and allergens may explain the localization and frequently complicates and exacerbates the picture. Secondary sensitization to multiple substances is common.

“…[4][5][6] Current clinical relevance (eg, an allergen in a source used by the patient in the anogenital area) is critical in interpreting patch test results. A positive reaction to thimerosal may indicate exposure to vaccines during childhood but have no current relevance to a patient's anogenital dermatitis if this ingredient cannot be verified in products currently being used by the patient.…”

“…The other 7 studies included fewer patients or women only and recruited subjects primarily from clinics that treated vulvar disorders. 4,5,[11][12][13][14][15] None of the previously reported studies included patients in North America. The objectives of this study were to characterize patients in North America with anogenital dermatitis referred for patch testing by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group (NACDG), to identify common allergens in individuals with anogenital ACD, and to explore associations of ACD with sex.…”

“…Kontakt dermatitlerin insidansı Oxford'daki bir vulva kliniğinde yapılan çalışmada %20-30, Avusturalya'da ise %15 olarak bildirilmiştir. Ancak geniş kitleleri içeren çalışma olmadığı için tam olarak insidansı bilinmemektedir (9,10). Vulvada irritasyona sebep olabilen birçok etken bulunmaktadır (Tablo 4) (7,11).…”

“…U pacjentek z zapaleniem sromu, szczególnie postacią nawracającą, należy wykonać badania dodatkowe w kierunku niedokrwistości i cukrzycy (morfologia, stężenia żelaza, ferrytyny oraz glukozy w surowicy). Literatura przedmiotu donosi, że niedokrwistość z niedoboru że-laza występuje nawet u 20% kobiet leczonych z powodu zapalenia skóry sromu [10]. Dużym problemem klinicznym stają się częste nawroty zapaleń i lekooporność drożdżaków na standardowe leczenie farmakologiczne.…”
