Aesthetic Surgery Performed by Plastic Surgery Residents

Abstract: Aesthetic surgery performed by plastic surgery residents under supervision by attending physicians is safe and provides for high levels of patient satisfaction postoperatively. Offering these services may be able to bridge the gap between providing high-quality aesthetic surgery training while yet recruiting an increasing number of patients who may appreciate the lower fees associated with these services.

Surgical errors are often caused by errors of judgement, carelessness, incomplete understanding of the situation, failure of vigilance and misperceptions.…”

“…So können Eingriffe durch einen Weiterbildungsassistenten unter direkter Anleitung durch einen erfahrenen Facharzt bei hoher Sicherheit und Patientenzufriedenheit durchgeführt werden. Für den Patienten wird dies durch einen entsprechenden finanziellen Anreiz ohne Nachteile in der Versorgung attraktiv [10,11]. Auch Rotationen in hauptsächlich ästhetisch aktive Kliniken oder zu niedergelassenen Kollegen wären denkbar.…”

“…more than 20-year experience as the Chair of the Department of Plastic and Hand Surgery at the University of Freiburg Medical Center, training in aesthetic surgery can be successfully incorporated into the residency curriculum. 5 Despite the structural differences between Germany and other countries, we believe that high-quality training in aesthetic surgery, although challenging, can be provided in Germany. We continue to believe that despite humbling results in our study, plastic surgeons are best equipped to deliver exceptional care to patients seeking aesthetic surgery by virtue of their training and knowledge of key plastic surgery principles.…”

“…5 Although for instance in the head and neck area, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons requirements are very specified (6 facelifts, 8 blepharoplasties, and 6 rhinoplasties), this is not so in Germany with more general minimum numbers for aesthetic procedures in the head and neck, trunk, and extremities.…”
