Aesthetic subunits of the trunk: Anatomy and behavior of skin and adipose tissue in each unit for better outcomes in liposuction

Abstract: Background:Liposuction and abdominal contouring is one of the most common procedures performed by plastic surgeons worldwide. Surprisingly, there has been few attempts at dividing the abdomen into subunits to delineate and aid in this endeavour. We have evolved a system of abdominal aesthetic subunits which has enabled us to achieve high quality results.Materials and Methods:A system of 8 subunits of the abdomen was evolved after analysing 1000 cases: Upper midline, upper rectus, lower rectus, pubic, Lateral a… Show more

“…It is also important to understand that fat in different anatomic locations has different architecture and needs to be factored to achieve the aesthetic three dimensional results. 10 Principle: (Figure 1) Liposuction removes the resistant fat by different mechanisms 8,9 : 1. Removal of fat cells by suction.…”

“…Liposuction techniques for abdominal contouring are well established and have been described in a multitude of papers and books published within the realm of aesthetic surgery. 10 , 11 , 12 Despite this, we believe it is worth reiterating in the context of DIEP flap breast reconstruction and showing the effect it can have on the overall reconstructive outcome. Successful liposuction begins prior to the OR with careful topographic mapping of areas of excess adiposity as well marking key anatomic landmarks such as the linea alba and linea semilunaris.…”
