Recebido em 18/1/07; aceito em 27/4/07; publicado na web em 25/10/07 SIZE DISTRIBUTION OF ATMOSPHERIC PARTICULATE IONIC SPECIES AT A COASTAL SITE IN PORTUGAL. A Berner impactor was used to collect size-differentiated aerosol samples from March to August 2003 in the city of Aveiro, on the Portuguese west coast. The samples were analysed for the main water-soluble ion species. The average concentration of sulphate, nitrate, chloride and ammonium was 6.38, 3.09, 1.67 and 1.27 μg m -3, respectively. The results show that SO 4 2-and NH 4 + were consistently present in the fine fraction < 1 μm, which represents, on average, 72 and 89% of their total atmospheric concentrations, respectively. The NO 3 -particles were concentrated in the coarse size. Chloride presented the characteristic coarse mode for marine aerosols. During some spring/summer events, an ammonium surplus was observed (NH 4 + /SO 4 2-molar ratios > 2), possibly due to greater availability of ammonia coming from agricultural activities or from the neighbouring chemical industrial complex. During the remaining periods, the aerosol was found to be somewhat acidic and predominantly in the form of ammonium bisulphate (NH 4 + /SO 4 2-molar ratios = 0.5-1.25). Samples collected under a major or exclusive influence of maritime air masses were essentially constituted by coarse particles with enrichment in sea salt, while for air masses of continental origin the contribution of water-soluble ionic species in the fine mode was more pronounced.

Abstract. We performed synergetic daytime and nighttime active and passive remote-sensing observations at Minorca (Balearic Islands, Spain), over more than 3 weeks during the Chemistry-Aerosol Mediterranean Experiment/Aerosol Direct Radiative Effect in the Mediterranean (ChArMEx/ADRIMED) special observation period (SOP 1a, June-July 2013). We characterized the aerosol optical properties and type in the low and middle troposphere using an automated procedure combining Rayleigh-Mie-Raman lidar (355, 387 and 407 nm) with depolarization (355 nm) and AERONET Cimel ® sun-photometer data. Results show a high variability due to varying dynamical forcing. The mean column-averaged lidar backscatter-to-extinction ratio (BER) was close to 0.024 sr −1 (lidar ratio of ∼ 41.7 sr), with a large dispersion of ±33 % over the whole observation period due to changing atmospheric transport regimes and aerosol sources. The ground-based remote-sensing measurements, coupled with satellite observations, allowed the documentation of (i) dust particles up to 5 km (above sea level) in altitude originating from Morocco and Algeria from 15 to 18 June with a peak in aerosol optical thickness (AOT) of 0.25 ± 0.05 at 355 nm, (ii) a long-range transport of biomass burning aerosol (AOT = 0.18 ± 0.16) related to North American forest fires detected from 26 to 28 June 2013 by the lidar between 2 and 7 km and (iii) mixture of local sources including marine aerosol particles and pollution from Spain. During the biomass burning event, the high value of the particle depolarization ratio (8-14 %) may imply the presence of dust-like particles mixed with the biomass burning aerosols in the mid-troposphere. For the field campaign period, we also show linearity with SEVIRI retrievals of the aerosol optical thickness despite 35 % relative bias, which is discussed as a function of aerosol type.

Aerosol particulate matter (PM 10 and PM 2.5 ) and trace gases (SO 2 , NO 2 , CO and O 3 ) were sampled at five locations in greater Dhaka, Bangladesh, between January and April 2006. Particulate matter was collected on microfiber filters with a low-volume sampler, and trace gases (SO 2 , NO 2 , and O 3 ) were collected with an impinger equipped with PM samplers. Carbon monoxide was determined using the Indicator Tube method. The total average concentrations of SO 2 , NO 2 , CO, and O 3 were 48.3, 21.0, 166.0 and 28 μg m -3 , respectively. The total average concentrations of SO 2 and NO 2 were much lower than the annual average guideline values of the World Health Organization (WHO). The total average O 3 concentration was also much lower than the daily maximum values established by WHO (average of 100 μg m -3 for an 8-h sample). The total average concentrations of five sites were 263, 75.5 and 66.2 μg m -3 for SPM, PM 10 and PM 2.5 , respectively. The mass of PM 2.5 is approximately 88% of the PM 10 mass, indicating that fossil fuel is the main source of PM in Dhaka. An atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used to determine the heavy metal concentrations in the PM 2.5 size fraction. The total average concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb, and Zn in PM 2.5 were 6.3, 13, 94, 433, 204, and 381 ng m -3 , respectively. The Pb concentration in Dhaka shows a decreasing tendency, presumably due to the ban on the use of leaded fuel. The overall trace metal concentrations in Dhaka are higher than those in European (e.g., Spain, Norway) and East Asian (e.g., Taiwan) locations, but lower than those measured in Southeast Asian (Kanpur, Delhi, Mumbai, India; Lahore, Pakistan) cities.
