Aerosol Inorganic Composition at a Tropical Site: Discrepancies Between Filter-Based Sampling and a Semi-Continuous Method

Abstract: The concentrations of the water-soluble inorganic aerosol species, ammonium (NH ; when filter-based samplers measured on average 40-90% less than the WAD/SJAC. The differences were not due to consistent systematic biases of the analytical techniques, but were apparently a result of prevailing environmental conditions and different sampling procedures. For the transition period and wet season, the significance of our results is reduced by a low number of data points. We argue that the observed differences are m… Show more

“…1. In terms of instrumentation, positive and negative sampling artifacts can be introduced, especially for semivolatile compounds like ammonium nitrate, by swings in temperature and relative humidity during the long sampling periods required by many techniques when employed at the low particle mass concentrations characteristic of the Amazon Basin [ Solomon and Sioutas , 2008; Trebs et al , 2008]. The development of instrumentation that can overcome these obstacles in tropical environments is needed.…”

“…These studies rely on the hypothesis that the concentration reduction of one specific compound does not affect the others, which is not true due to lifetime differences between gas and aerosol phases induced by contrasted deposition rates; for instance, a reduction of sulfate increases the amount of FNH x available for the formation of nitrate that deposit less than HNO 3 (Davidson and Wu, 1990), which finally increases the TNO 3 reservoir. These difficulties may be overcome through the combined use of observations and deposition parameterizations in observation-based box models (Vayenas et al, 2005). As these models cannot integrate the whole complexity at stake in the atmosphere, CTMs are still needed to assess the nitrate formation regime and the PM response to precursors changes, but they require in turn validation by experimental data.…”

“…There are published comparisons between filter sampling and semicontinuous methods (e.g., Nie et al, 2010) but not with the commercially available MARGA. Trebs et al (2008) compared Amazonian ammonium, nitrate, chloride, and sulphate concentrations analyzed from filter samples with those measured with an instrument similar to MARGA. In the comparison, ammonium was the only cation, and in that instrument it was analyzed with FIA.…”
