Aerodynamic Decelerators for Planetary Exploration: Past, Present, and Future

Abstract: In this paper, aerodynamic decelerators are defined as textile devices intended to be deployed at Mach numbers below five. Such aerodynamic decelerators include parachutes and inflatable aerodynamic decelerators (often known as ballutes). Aerodynamic decelerators play a key role in the Entry, Descent, and Landing (EDL) of planetary exploration vehicles. Among the functions performed by aerodynamic decelerators for such vehicles are deceleration (often from supersonic to subsonic speeds), minimization of descen… Show more

“…A 19.7 m diameter DGB parachute was flight tested as part of the Viking qualification program (Cruz and Lingard, 2006). Analysis shows this to be adequate to decelerate the 19.4 T lander (deorbit propellant expended) in the supersonic deceleration phase, from M = 2.7 to M = 0.8 (Braun and Maiming, 2007).…”

“…Inflatable aerodynamic decelerator (IAD) [1][2][3] is a device for deceleration process in Entry, Descent and Landing (EDL) process 4) of planetary exploration mission. For instance, in Mars exploration mission, supersonic parachute which is a kind of IAD is used to achieve adequate deceleration for the landing.…”

“…For example, Gillis [5] has proposed an upper bound of Mach 2 for parachute aerodynamic decelerators at Mars. However, Cruz [3] places the upper Mach number range somewhere between two and three.…”
