Aerodynamic Analysis of a Supersonic Transport Aircraft at Landing Speed Conditions

Abstract: Supersonic flight for commercial aviation is gaining a renewed interest, especially for business aviation, which demands the reduction of flight times for transcontinental routes. So far, the promise of civil supersonic flight has only been afforded by the Concorde and Tupolev T-144 aircraft. However, little or nothing can be found about the aerodynamics of these aeroshapes, the knowledge of which is extremely interesting to obtain before the development of the next-generation high-speed aircraft. Therefore, t… Show more

“…However, in the last few years, in line with the European Commission interests, we are also assisting with the renewed interest in supersonic transport by a few US companies for both business and common routes. In this context, there is flourishing research about aerodynamic investigations of very different aircraft configurations [24][25][26][27][28][29].…”

“…In this scenario, affordable and less time-consuming numerical codes with robust numerical schemes and accurate domain discretizations are of fundamental importance to have a reliable design tool to feed Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) procedures [6,9,10]. With this in mind, the present study focuses on the aerodynamic analysis of a BWB prototype, namely N2A, at low-Mach number conditions with the aim to explore and assess the accuracy of flowfield simulations carried out with grids built with about 15 M cells (half body), suitable for MDO procedures.…”
