Screening Life Cycle Assessment of Silver-Based Conductive Adhesive vs. Lead-Based Solder and Plating Materials

Conductive adhesives are getting growing attention in the electronics industry as they constitute an alternative to lead-free solders and conventional solders. The purpose of the present research is to compare the 10Sn90Pb solder paste to an epoxy based isotropically conductive adhesive (ICA) containing pure silver. The study is done from a life cycle perspective in Japan using input data from literature and the inventory results are evaluated using the Life cycle Impact assessment Method based on Endpoint modeling (LIME) methodology. The findings are that the silver containing adhesive, excluding platings, are superior to the 10Sn90Pb, and that trade-offs exist between 10Sn90Pb and silver-epoxy ICA. For surface platings palladium dominates the results. Overall, the results are dominated by various lead emissions, the silver resource consumption, and the sulfur oxide emissions from palladium production. The most important research limitations are the representativity of the metal production data and end-of-life scenario. The value of the present study is that so far no LIME-based life cycle impact assessment case study comparing 10Sn90Pb solder paste and silver-epoxy ICA including platings has been reported.

Synthesis of Pt/C Catalysts through Reductive Deposition: Ways of Tuning Catalytic Properties

Characteristic features of Pt/C catalysts prepared through reductive deposition from an aqueous solution have been investigated. The carbon support was found to act as an effective nucleating agent and to ensure the formation of small and predominantly nonaggregated Pt particles, probably through a preliminary formation of oxide nuclei on the carbon surface. The deposition rates could be high enough to provide the location of Pt nanoparticles near the external surface of the support and outside micropores. The depositions onto bare carbon supports and Pt/C samples presynthesized by using another method proved equally effective, which thus opened a route to various types of metal distribution. With the same metal precursor, reductant, and base (H2PtCl6, NaOOCH, Na2CO3), catalytic properties could be influenced through the support, Pt loading, and deposition conditions. In the oxidation of isopropyl alcohol as a model test reaction, alcohol conversion could be as high as 99.7 % and turnover frequencies 80 000 h−1 [H2O, O2, 1 bar (100 kPa), 30 °C].

In this contribution, the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol using molecular oxygen over supported manganese and vanadium catalysts was investigated. The catalytic activities were significantly improved after preoxidizing the activated carbon support materials. Characterizations of nitrogen physisorption, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray absorption were involved to examine the physicochemical properties of as-prepared catalysts. By ruling out the effects of specific surface area, active site dispersion, valence and local coordination of Mn and V active species, the improved catalytic activity was attributed to the specific variety and increased density of oxygen-containing groups on activated carbon support surfaces, which was further confirmed by cyclic voltammetry measurements and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.
