Aerobic Exercise Training and Inducible Inflammation: Results of a Randomized Controlled Trial in Healthy, Young Adults

Abstract: BackgroundConsensus panels regularly recommend aerobic exercise for its health‐promoting properties, due in part to presumed anti‐inflammatory effects, but many studies show no such effect, possibly related to study differences in participants, interventions, inflammatory markers, and statistical approaches. This variability makes an unequivocal determination of the anti‐inflammatory effects of aerobic training elusive. Methods and ResultsWe conducted a randomized controlled trial of 12 weeks of aerobic exercis… Show more

“…In Cohort 2, 1 ng/mL LPS (Sigma-Aldrich #L4130) was used to stimulate heparinized .blood for 4 h at 37 °C. Plasma was collected post centrifugation at 2,040 g for 5 min and stored at −20 °C for subsequent cytokine quantification ( Sloan et al, 2018 ).…”

“…Exercise is an inflammatory stimulus that paves the way for physical and metabolic adaptations to oxidative stress, 99,100 a mitohormetic process 73,82,101 instigated by Pgc-1α. 102 Although the PEMF exposure paradigm used in the present report was relatively innocuous (60 minutes of total exposure distributed over 6 weeks at 1.5 mT) and previously provided no indications of cellular stress, 36 here, we combined it with an exercise regimen that was exhaustive by design, which in combination with PEMF treatment may have achieved a threshold level of inflammatory stress.…”

“…Cholinesterase inhibitors, which are approved for the symptomatic treatment of mild to moderate AD, have been of interest for MCI treatment, but numerous studies have failed to indicate a benefit in reducing MCI or the progression to dementia [ 109 , 122 ]. Therefore, other medications are being analyzed in clinical trials (NIH/NIA).…”
