“…In addition to low-altitude¯ying with the ever-present danger of striking obstacles, agricultural pilots are subject to high occupational stress from heat [Froom et al, 1993;Gribetz et al, 1980], noise, G forces, vibration, and heavy work schedules [Richter et al, 1981]. Exacerbating these hazards is the potential for exposure to organophosphate, carbamate, and other pesticides that can decrease cholinesterase levels and compromise the high level neurologic performance required for precision¯ying [Quantick and Perry, 1981;Reich and Berner, 1968;Richter et al, 1981]. Such exposure has been documented in studies that measured pesticide levels in cockpit air [Atallah et al, 1982;Richter et al, 1980], on aircraft surfaces [Yoshida et al, 1990], in blood or urine of pilots [Driskell et al, 1991;Knopp and Glass, 1991], and in studies that detected decrements in cholinesterase levels [Dellinger, 1985;Richter et al, 1980;Smith et al, 1968] or documented poisoning episodes [Roan et al, 1982;Shapiro, 1990].…”

“…There also numerous case reports and case registries indicating that 4-9% of individuals with acute organophosphate poisoning experience delayed or persistent neuropsychiatric effects, including depression, weakness, nervousness, irritability, fatigue, insomnia, forgetfulness, confusion, and schizoid and depressive reactions [Gershon and Shaw, 1961 ;Dille and Smith, 1964;Durham et al, 1965;Holmes and Gaon, 1956;Tabershaw and Cooper, 1966;Hirshberg and Lerman, 19841. Behavioral impairments due to pesticide exposure have also been implicated in serious accidents among agricultural workers [Redhead, 1968;Wood et al, 1971;Reich and Berner, 1968;Tabershaw and Cooper, 1966;Smith et al, 19681.…”
