Adventive eriophyoid mites: a global review of their impact, pathways, prevention and challenges

Abstract: Eriophyoids have high potential as adventive mite species (AMS) because their small size make them difficult to detect, and can be easily distributed in world trade. Economic, social and environmental impact from adventive eriophyoid mites has been significant. Considerable attention has been given to adventive insect species while adventive mites have received little attention and little information is available for eriophyoids. This paper summarizes information on adventive eriophyoid mites, their impact, an… Show more

“…data), on human travelers, or by taking advantage of past and present military conflicts, using the movement of the war logistical resources to extend their range to other countries and continents (Lockwood 2009;Canyon et al 2011;Pimentel 2011;Chevillon et al 2012). The economic or medical importance of the Acari increases with their ability to vector viruses, rickettsiae, spirochaetes, phytoplasmas, mycoplasmas and protozoas, or to harbor and transport nematodes, bacteria and fungi pathogens that affect plants, domestic and wild animals and humans (Jongejan and Uilenberg 2004;Mullen and OConnor 2009;Nicholson et al 2009;Bastianel et al 2010;Navajas et al 2010;Navia et al 2010Navia et al , 2012aRodrigues and Childers 2012).…”

“…data). Another group of fast-moving, adventive mites are species in the superfamily Eriophyoidea (Navia et al 2010(Navia et al , 2012a. The number of described species of eriophyoid mites is also quickly growing, which will certainly lead to an increase in the number of invasive species.…”

“…Several species of eriophyid mites can transmit viruses or phytoplasmas (Paliwal 1980) but no microorganism transmission has been proved on olive tress. The microscopic size and cryptic behavior of eriophyid mites make monitoring and management very difficult (Navia et al 2010). Common name -olive leaf and flower mite.…”

“…Navia et al, in 2009, conclude that because of their very small size, that makes them difficult to be detected and so easily distributed by world trade, Eriophyid mites have a high potential as invasive alien species. The new goji pest had been for the first time reported on the European territory of United Kingdom, in April 2008, and was discovered by chance, following one regular inspection of some goji plants in a nursery in Guernsey.…”
