Advantages of diapause in Trichogramma dendrolimi mass production on eggs of the Chinese silkworm, Antheraea pernyi

Abstract: In a 3-year augmentative field release from 2014 to 2016, diapaused T. dendrolimi showed effective parasitism on eggs of the Asian corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis. These results indicated that diapaused T. dendrolimi can be an efficient alternative method for mass rearing of T. dendrolimi for long-term cold storage. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry.

“…Our study newly demonstrates that Anastatus fulloi, A. gansuensis, A. meilingensis and A. japonicus are natural egg parasitoids of Caligula japonica and thus are potential biological control agents of this pest in China. Further, all four species were reared successfully on the eggs of the alternate host, A. pernyi in the laboratory, as for some Trichogramma species (Zhang et al 2017;Li et al 2018), which demonstrates the possibility of massrearing the species for augmentative release against C. japonica. However, further study is required to evaluate their parasitism and possible competition in the field for biological control efficacy, as well as any effects of adaptation on A. pernyi eggs upon field-release.…”

“…Zhang et al. () recently showed that Trichogramma dendrolimi Matsumura benefits from the diapause state in terms of quality of long‐term cold storage and parasitism efficiency on the Asian corn borer, O. furnacalis , during mass releases. Fundamental research will help improve such methods by focusing on costs of diapause, on diapause induction and termination signals, and on getting a better knowledge of diapause heritability.…”

“…Thus, research currently focuses on improving storage methods in order to produce effective natural enemies whilst balancing production costs.
