Advantages and applications of the centerline method for characterizing regional ventricular function.

Abstract: We sought to identify theoretical advantages and applications of the centerline method for quantitative assessment of regional ventricular function. Motion was measured along 100 chords constructed perpendicular to a centerline drawn midway between the end-diastolic and end-systolic contours, and normalized for heart size. Abnormality was expressed in units of standard deviations from the mean motion in a normal reference population to indicate both the severity and significance of the wall motion abnormality.… Show more

“…The ejection fraction and the wall motion severity index (WMSI) (SD/chord) were calculated. 23 Quantitative angiography, using the smallest diameter from two orthogonal planes (QCA 4.0, Pie Medical Imaging), was done at baseline and follow-up. Restenosis was defined as a minimum luminal diameter of Ͻ50% of the reference diameter.…”

“…The centerline method of regional wall motion analysis was developed to address these concerns. Its sensitivity and specificity in detecting abnormal regional function compare favorably with rectangular and radial methods (Sheehan et al 1986) and its reliability has been previously documented (Sheehan et al 1983). In our present study, interobserver variability was larger than that of Sheehan's results (1983) measured from ventriculograms.…”
