Advancing wireless link signatures for location distinction

Abstract: Location distinction is the ability to determine when a device has changed its position. We explore the opportunity to use sophisticated PHY-layer measurements in wireless networking systems for location distinction. We first compare two existing location distinction methods -one based on channel gains of multi-tonal probes, and another on channel impulse response. Next, we combine the benefits of these two methods to develop a new link measurement that we call the complex temporal signature. We use a 2.4 GHz … Show more

“…• Despite that phase information enriches the feature space, it needs careful calibration to mitigate dramatic drifts due to external noise [21]. The amplitude of CFR, in contrast, remains sensitive to human activities in the vicinity, yet pertains the spectral structures in case of external perturbation.…”

“…The history H can be polluted by the wrong distinction results through updating. Since distinction errors are sporadic while temporal fading changes are consistent [2], continuously updating history is still advantageous. In addition, we also prevent serious error propagation by periodically flushing the history H with new training mappings.…”

“…Given that the multipath characteristics of the link vary considerably at different locations several wavelengths away from each other, their measurements are a good "signature" of the link. This link signatures is formally defined as [1], [2], [10], [11]: h…”
