Advancing the argument for validity of the Alberta Context Tool with healthcare aides in residential long-term care

Abstract: BackgroundOrganizational context has the potential to influence the use of new knowledge. However, despite advances in understanding the theoretical base of organizational context, its measurement has not been adequately addressed, limiting our ability to quantify and assess context in healthcare settings and thus, advance development of contextual interventions to improve patient care. We developed the Alberta Context Tool (the ACT) to address this concern. It consists of 58 items representing 10 modifiable c… Show more

“…The psychometric testing of the nursing home version was based on responses from 645 care aides. 25 Results of confirmatory factor analyses were consistent with the factor structure theorized in the development of the ACT. For 8 ACT concepts, we found significant correlations with instrumental research utilization; internal consistency reliability (Cronbach's a 0.70 for 8 of 10 concepts) and acceptability (there was minimal missing data with 93.5% of the health care aides providing complete data on all ACT items and the time to complete the ACT survey was below target with a mean of 11.08 minutes and an SD of 2.93 minutes) were confirmed.…”

“…[5,21] Through the organizational assessment and stakeholder interviews, we were able to gain the support for the practice change which also led to additional resources from nursing that were not initially anticipated. Estabrooks, et al [22] highlighted the importance of a positive context in promoting greater research utilization. This was found in the context of residential long-term care where they were testing their Alberta Context Tool.…”

“…The use of context assessment DISCUSSION NIHR Journals Library www.journalslibrary.nihr.ac.uk tools 209 offers the opportunity to provide a more fine-grained account of what resources (e.g. location of management and internal hierarchies in the care home) need to be in place for continence interventions to be implemented.…”
