Advancing the analysis of treatment process

Abstract: Aims To review the role of process research in clinical research, to summarize progress in statistical methods for process analyses, and to describe a dynamic analytical approach that can provide new insights into the processes responsible for the effects of treatments and other variables. Summary Process research helps us to understand what happens during our interventions, and can yield valuable knowledge regardless of whether an intervention is found to have significant effects. This is a review of recent s… Show more

“…All of these additional variables can create inconsistencies across findings making conclusions difficult, especially when the number of studies is small. However, this is an important, emerging field, and appropriate methodology is becoming better known (Stout 2007). We anticipate that studies in this area will increase in quantity, consistency, and quality.…”

“…Over the past decade, methodology has been developed that provides opportunities for applying advanced statistical methods to identify variability in substance-use patterns across individuals as a function of time and covariates (Hser et al, 2001; Maisto and Connors, 2006; McKay et al, 2006; Muthén and Muthén, 2000; Stout, 2007). One method, latent growth mixture modeling (LGMM), is a longitudinal-data analytic technique that combines finite mixture modeling with a latent growth-curve model.…”

“…This trend parallels a broader growing emphasis on the need to further discern possible mechanisms of action for different types of treatment (Kraemer, Wilson, Fairburn, & Agras, 2002;Stout, 2007). In addition, it has become more feasible, with modern statistical techniques (e.g.…”

“…In addition, it has become more feasible, with modern statistical techniques (e.g. hierarchical linear modelling), to incorporate a larger number of time points in order to better measure dynamic processes as they occur throughout treatment (Stout, 2007). In treatment research and clinical practice, the HVQ-B can be informative as either a treatment outcome or a process measure.…”
