High molecular polymers have been widely studied and applied in the field of enhanced oil recovery (EOR). At present, the focus of research has been changed to the design of polymer networks with unique properties such as anti-temperature and anti-salinity, good injection and so on. Supramolecular polymers have high viscoelasticity as well as excellent temperature, salt resistance and injection properties. Can supramolecular polymers become another material choice for polymer flooding to enhance oil recovery? The present review aims to systematically introduce supramolecular polymers, including its design strategy, interactions and rheological properties, and address three main concerns: (1) Why choose supramolecular polymers? (2) How do we synthesize and characterize supramolecular polymers in the field of oilfield chemistry? (3) What has been the application progress of supramolecular polymers in improving oil recovery? The introduction of a supramolecular interaction system provides a new idea for polymer flooding and opens up a new research direction to improve oil recovery. Aiming at the “reversible dynamic” supramolecular polymers, the supramolecular polymers are compared with the conventional covalent macromolecular polymer networks, and the challenges and future research directions of supramolecular polymers in EOR are discussed. Finally, the author’s viewpoints and perspectives in this emerging field are discussed.

The possibility and the prospect of cationic/anionic (“catanionic”) surfactant mixtures based on sulfonate Gemini surfactant (SGS) and bisquaternary ammonium salt (BQAS) in the field of enhanced oil recovery was investigated. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of SGS/BQAS surfactant mixtures was 5.0 × 10−6 mol/L, 1–2 orders of magnitude lower than neat BQAS or SGS. A solution of either neat SGS or BQAS, could not reach an ultra‐low interfacial tension (IFT); but 1:1 mol/mol mixtures of SGS/BQAS reduced the IFT to 1.0 × 10−3 mN/m at 100 mg/L. For the studied surfactant concentrations, all mixtures exhibited the lowest IFT when the molar fraction of SGS among the surfactant equaled 0.5, indicating optimal conditions for interfacial activity. The IFT between the 1:1 mol/mol SGS/BQAS mixtures and crude oil decreased and then increased with the NaCl and CaCl2 concentrations. When the total surfactant concentration was above 50 mg/L, the IFT of SGS/BQAS mixtures was below 0.01 mN/m at the studied NaCl concentrations. Adding inorganic salt reduced the charges of hydrophilic head groups, thereby making the interfacial arrangement more compact. At the NaCl concentration was above 40,000 mg/L, surfactant molecules moved from the liquid–liquid interface to the oil phase, thus resulting in low interfacial activity. In addition, inorganic salts decreased the attractive interactions of the SGS/BQAS micelles that form in water, decreasing the apparent hydrodynamic radius (DH, app) of surfactant aggregates. When the total concentration of surfactants was above 50 mg/L, the IFT between the SGS/BQAS mixtures and crude oil decreased first and then increased with time. At different surfactant concentrations, the IFT of the SGS/BQAS mixtures attained the lowest values at different times. A high surfactant concentration helped surfactant molecules diffuse from the water phase to the interfacial layer, rapidly reducing the IFT. In conclusion, the cationic‐anionic Gemini surfactant mixtures exhibit superior interfacial activity, which may promote the application of Gemini surfactant.

Polyacrylamide‐based hydrophobically associating polymers (HAPAM) containing capsaicin derivatives and itaconic acid with acrylamide (AM) and methacrylic acid (MAA) as the main bodies, and N‐vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) as the functional monomer are prepared by a one‐pot synthesis of the soap‐free emulsion polymerization process. The structure is characterized by fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), and thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA) explores thermal stability. For achieving proper purification, excellent preservation and convenient transportation of the polymer and to advance its practical engineering applications, two different treatments, namely ethanol washout and freeze‐drying, are carried out and compared. The surface morphology observation manifests that the freeze‐drying products (DHPAM) better protect the three‐dimensional cross‐linked network structure formed by various supramolecular forces such as hydrophobic association, electrostatic and hydrogen bonding inside the polymer than the ethanol washout products (EHPAM), which well explains why DHPAM has lower critical association concentration (CAC), greater resistance to high temperature and high salt, and better corrosion inhibition performance than EHPAM. It is significant for strengthening the application of polymers in related fields, especially oil and gas extraction.
