Advances in Vascular Cognitive Impairment

Abstract: A dvances in our understanding of vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) have springboarded from further elucidation of the role of vascular risk factors, surgical procedures, medications, and neuroimaging studies that are related to this condition. The main focus of this VCI review will highlight the relation of diabetes mellitus and hippocampal dysfunction in VCI; coronary artery bypass surgery and cognitive decline; the role of cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) in vascular dysfunction; and a discussion of othe… Show more

“…In most cases, there is a simultaneous expression or overlapping of these states, depending on concurrent risk factors and pathophysiological mechanisms. 58,59 These observations have served as a basis for prospective epidemiological and clinical studies aiming to define the potential relationship between inflammation and cognitive impairment, and to identify systemic and brain inflammatory markers associated with post-stroke cognitive dysfunctions.…”

“…In addition, Edinburgh handedness score, MMSE, and depression using the Beck Depression Inventory were recorded (Supplemental Appendix). The following 4 domains were thoroughly assessed: (1) 14 assessed auditory working memory. The subject was asked to listen to 60 numbers listed one by one, every 4 seconds, and at the same time add the 2 last numbers heard, answering orally.…”

“…1 Thus, the concept of stroke, as principally founded in motor function or ability in activities of daily living, may be insufficient with respect to changes in cognitive functioning. 2 Subtle CDF may indeed be missed within the hospital context and revealed only when returning to previous socioprofessional activities, leading to social handicap even more disturbing because unrecognized.…”
