Advances in Ureteral Stent Design and Materials

Abstract: Purpose of ReviewThere are three technological parameters that play a key role on the performance of an ideal stent. These are its material, design and surface coating. This article highlights some fundamental developments that took place in these three areas of stent’s technology, in order to contribute to the identification of an ideal stent.Recent FindingsIn addition to technological developments concerning stent’s material, design and surface coating, the flow dynamic performance of stents has recently att… Show more

“…With the improvement of medical technology and the application of new biomaterials and ureteral stent coatings, the incidence of infection and encrustation has declined significantly [3]. However, many studies indicated that ureter stent indwelling time is highly associated with the incidence of encrustation [4].…”

“…There are three main classes of materials used to fabricate ureteral stents: metals, polymers and biodegradable/bio-absorbable materials. In comparison to metal stents (introduced by Gort et al) that are more resistant [15][16][17][18][19], polymeric stents (thermoplastic, thermoset elastomers and silicone-based) are more tolerated by the patients. Bio-degradable/bio-absorbable stents are more recent, and have been shown to reduce the requirement for secondary procedures (i.e.…”

“…However, due to the characteristics of impermeable urothelium and the continuous washing of urine, the effectiveness of local chemotherapy was limited. Therefore, it is needed to realize the controlled and sustained drug release in the upper tract, which can overcome the above problems (Mosayyebi et al, 2018).…”
