Advances in understanding of health‐promoting benefits of medicine and food homology using analysis of gut microbiota and metabolomics

Abstract: The health-promoting benefits of medicine and food homology (MFH) are known for thousands of years in China. However, active compounds and biological mechanisms are unclear, greatly limiting clinical practice of MFH. The advent of gut microbiota analysis and metabolomics emerge as key tools to discover functional compounds, therapeutic targets, and mechanisms of benefits of MFH. Such studies hold great promise to promote and optimize functional efficacy and development of MFH-based products, for example, foods… Show more

“…[ 12 ] More importantly, after being absorbed, it has a good blood‐replenishing effect and can catalyze complicated ORR at the three‐phase (catalyst/solvent/oxygen species) reaction interface under ambient temperature. [ 13 ] According to the periodic expansion catalysis concept reported before, [ 14 ] the clue of ORR catalyst design is a good reference for solving the SRR problems faced by LiS batteries. If H‐bond networks are rationally designed on the catalyst/electrolyte interface to cooperate with Li‐bonds, the enrichment, and transfer of solvated LiPSs on the catalyst surface can be realized, further stimulating subsequent catalytic processes ( Scheme ).…”

“…Many natural plants with healthy-enhancing properties have a long history of being used as food and medicine in Asian countries, dating back several thousands of years. 7,8 Ferula lehmannii Boiss. (FLB), belonging to the genus Ferula, has a strong onion and garlic odor, and its fresh stems and leaves are consumed as a seasonal vegetable, and are commonly used as a seasoning for traditional Chinese meat products when mature and dried.…”

“…Currently used hypolipidemic drugs administered to regulate LMD are suboptimal as they may cause liver or kidney damage, adverse gastrointestinal reactions, and organismic and other side effects of drug resistance ( Elagina et al, 2020 ). As natural cholesterol-lowering active food ingredients are urgently needed, functional compounds isolated from natural foods are increasingly acknowledged to alleviate LMD ( Li et al, 2019 ; Yang et al, 2020 ; Zhang et al, 2022 ).…”
