Advances in two‐dimensional GC with glass capillary columns

Abstract: A versatile two-dimensional gas chromatograph is described, consisting of 2 separate ovens, one intermediate trap, an auxiliary inlet, and the necessary hardware to effect off-line switching according to the principle of Deans. The unit has been designed for use with high resolution glass capillary columns. The petformance of individual instrumental components was critically evaluated. Results showed that low dead volume glass to metal connections were required in the manifold and detector lines to minimize ex… Show more

“…The metal surface has been reported to have caused catalytic degrada- tion of certain organophosphorus pesticides (14) as well as hydrogenation of a-ionol (15). Indeed, even earlier it was suspected that certain types of organic compounds may be unable to withstand exposure to surfaces of metals like platinum (16,17). In a comparison of commercial instruments, signs of unfavorable characteristics were also reported when a conventional test mixture was used as a sample (1 8).…”

“…The theoretical potentials for multidimensional chromatography have been studied [224] and the technology associated with MDGC has been reviewed [225,226]. The extra-column effects in MDGC have been assessed [227], and the effects of pressure and temperature upon solute behavior in coupled column systems have been investigated [228,229], Several studies have been presented which used coupled two-column MDGC systems [230][231][232]. Also, a theoretical investigation was presented [233] which examined the effects of polarity change in a capillary MDGC system.…”

“…Also, the use of tandem dissimilar columns, "* column systems which incorporate various switching mechanisms, and the information content of this mode of gas chromatography have been investigated. Several studies [14][15][16][17][18][19] have investigated two-dimensional GC which involved dissimilar stationary phases, various forms of column switching, and backflushing to obtain *A shorter and earlier review of MDGC with respect to GC system design was presented in reference [3], pages 101 through 106.…”
