Advances in the field of π-conjugated 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridines

Abstract: This critical review summarizes the research progress made in the field of π-conjugated terpyridines within the last decade. Supramolecular materials based on metal ion complexes of 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine derivatives have found manifold potential applications-from opto-electronic devices to life science. In this contribution, synthetic strategies towards π-conjugated terpyridines and their incorporation into advanced supramolecular architectures are evaluated. Applications as photoactive species in, e.g., phot… Show more

“…Polypyridines have attracted much attentions for their high binding affinity toward transition-metal ions, and have awide range of applications in OLEDs, dye-lasers, sensors and phototherapeutic reagents [2][3][4]. During our synthesis of some poly-dentated organic ligands and their metal ions complexes, we got the title compound, and report it structure here.…”

“…These structures were applied for metal ion sensing [10][11][12], counter anion sensing [8,13,14], sensing of bio-molecules [15,16], and for bio-imaging [17]. Incorporation of terpy derivatives into polymeric matrices often results in the formation of functional materials that can be employed as effective sensors [18]. For example, solutions of polyiminofluorene based polymer decorated with terpy groups were utilized as a highly sensitive and specific fluorimetric zinc sensor in organic solvent media [10].…”

“…Terpy motifs have been anchored onto a large number of solid supports resulting in functional materials with enhanced stability and excellent light absorption properties [18,[23][24][25][26][27][28][29]. Nishihara et al have achieved long range electron transport for molecular electric wires by assembling bis(terpyridine) metal complexes on gold surfaces.…”

“…Metallo-supramolecular polymers have recently received much attention as a new type polymer in which the polymer backbone is formed by coordination bonds [1][2][3][4]. The electronic interaction between the metal ion and the ligand through the coordination bonds causes unique properties.…”
