Advances in the Etiology, Detection, and Clinical Management of Seborrheic Keratoses

Abstract: Seborrheic keratoses (SKs) are ubiquitous, generally benign skin tumors that exhibit high clinical variability. While age is a known risk factor, the precise roles of UV exposure and immune abnormalities are currently unclear. The underlying mechanisms of this benign disorder are paradoxically driven by oncogenic mutations and may have profound implications for our understanding of the malignant state. Advances in molecular pathogenesis suggest that inhibition of Akt and APP, as well as existing treatments for… Show more

“…These lesions involve the lower leg (around the ankle) and are more often seen in elderly males. They are clinically characterized by a white to yellow, warty surface 24 . The name Stucco Keratosis is derived from its typical “stuck on” appearance.…”

“…In children, SK is easily confused with VP. On RCM, SK-specific characteristics include cerebriform-shaped, abnormal dermal papilla, which have been proven to be very valuable in adult 2,4,8 but not pediatric patients.…”

“…4 Upregulation of immune factors such as endothelin-1 (EDN-1) and tumour necrosis factor alpha have also been recently described in the pathogenesis. 1 High levels of tumour necrosis factor alpha causes increased levels of EDN-1 in the lesional skin, which is a strong keratinocyte derived mitogen and enhances melanin production. This may be responsible for pigmentation in SK.…”
