Advances in the Deterministic Synthesis of Uniform Amplitude Pencil Beam Concentric Ring Arrays

Abstract: We present some modifications to the deterministic approach (DA) recently proposed for fast design of aperiodic concentric ring arrays. Such modifications are aimed at improving the array performances in terms of directivity, side lobe level (SLL) and number of control points. In particular, an easy implementation of the size-tapering concept is provided within the processing scheme of the DA procedure; moreover, an improved collocation criterion is presented. Finally, a local optimization procedure, tailored … Show more

“…Moreover, constraint iv) implies that the feed density tapering, which is required to fulfill the SLL constraints in (1), can be obtained only along the radial direction. As a consequence, a significant degradation of the aperture efficiency, hence of the achievable directivity, must be expected with respect to the sparse array solutions found in [8]- [11] where, in order to guarantee a sub-regional coverage, it has been possible on one side to fully (that is, in both range and azimuth directions) exploit the feed density tapering [9], [11] and on the other side to apply a proper "feed size" tapering [8], [10], [11].…”

“…This sparse characteristic is very useful in certain applications such as mobile devices and satellites, particularly for the situation where the weight and size antenna system is extremely limited. Different approaches of sparsity in the antenna array have been reported in [8][9][10][11][12].…”
