Original PaperComparison of nonporous silica-based ion exchangers and monolithic ion exchangers in separations of inorganic anions Low capacity anion exchangers for IC have been prepared by modification of nonporous uniformed silica MICRA microbeads and by modification of the organic polymeric monolithic matrixes prepared in situ in quarz capillary. Due to the small particle size (1.5 lm) high-performance adsorbents were prepared allowing to obtain up to 190 000 tp/m. However, the column possesses a very high back-pressure and can be used in a short length up to 50 mm only to meet the requirements of conventional chromatographic equipment. An analysis of a test mixture of seven anions was completed within 3 min with a back column pressure of about 350 bar (HETP of about 5.5 lm, where HETP is the height equivalent to the theoretical plate). Monolithic capillary columns provide lower efficiency per column unit length than MICRA columns; however, they can be used at a longer length because of their low flow resistance. Monolithic column of ca. 40 cm length has workable pressure below 10 bar and allows separation of a five anions test mixture within less than 10 min. A better efficiency of monolithic column (HETP l75 lm) can be achieved at reduced flow rates when the analysis time is not a critical parameter.

Determination of fluoride in Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) using ion chromatography and its pretreatments selection

A rapid, sensitive and reliable method to quantify fluoride in Antarctic krill has been established. Four different pretreatment methods were used for the extraction of fluoride: double-deionised water extraction, sulphuric acid distillation, hydrochloric acid extraction, and pH adjustment with buffer after hydrochloric acid extraction. Four methods of comparative analysis revealed that sulphuric acid distillation was suitable preparation for ion chromatography determination of fluoride in Antarctic krill (fluoride content 288.7 ± 10.2 mg/kg). The method was partially validated in linearity, accuracy, and precision. The linear range was from 0.1 to 10.0 mg/l with the regression coefficient of 0.99998. The accuracy expressed as the recoveries of standard addition ranged from 95.3% to 101.3%, the relative standard deviation (n = 8) was 1.8-1.9%. With this method, the 3σ limit of detection was 0.06 mg/l of fluoride in Antarctic krill. Our results indicate that the method (limit of quantification 0.2 mg/l) could be well applied for the determination of fluoride in Antarctic krill.

Abstract. An ion chromatographic method for determination of fluoride, chloride, nitrate and sulphate in untreated and treated drinking waters was described. An automated 850 IC Professional, Metrohm system equipped with conductivity detector and Metrosep A Supp 7-250 (250 x 4 mm) column was used. The validation of the method was performed for simultaneous determination of all studied analytes and the results have showed that the validated method fits the requirements of the current water legislation. The main analytical characteristics were estimated for each of studied analytes: limits of detection, limits of quantification, working and linear ranges, repeatability and intermediate precision, recovery. The trueness of the method was estimated by analysis of certified reference material for soft drinking water. Recovery test was performed on spiked drinking water samples. An uncertainty was estimated. The method was applied for analysis of drinking waters before and after chlorination.
