Advances in Plant-Derived Scaffold Proteins

Abstract: Scaffold proteins form critical biomatrices that support cell adhesion and proliferation for regenerative medicine and drug screening. The increasing demand for such applications urges solutions for cost effective and sustainable supplies of hypoallergenic and biocompatible scaffold proteins. Here, we summarize recent efforts in obtaining plantderived biosynthetic spider silk analogue and the extracellular matrix protein, collagen. Both proteins are composed of a large number of tandem block repeats, which mak… Show more

“…Additionally, the Zeta potential test showed a surface charge of 47mV, indicating the stability of the nanocarrier. These findings suggest that the chitosan-agarose nanocomposite hydrogel containing nanoclay has the potential for breast cancer treatment [14].…”

“…There is still no information about the recognition motifs and glycosylation patterns on spider silk proteins. Due to the lack of knowledge on spidroin PTMs, the PTM system of a production host might not fit the needs of the spider protein molecules ( Peng et al, 2020 ). Future studies of spider silk proteomes can provide more details concerning PTMs of spidroins contributing towards a better understanding of their effects on mechanical properties, fibre assembly and solubility as well as selection of appropriate expression hosts.…”
