Advances in pathogenesis and treatment of essential hypertension

Abstract: Hypertension is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and the leading cause of premature death worldwide. However, the pathogenesis of the hypertension, especially essential hypertension, is complex and requires in-depth studies. Recently, new findings about essential hypertension have emerged, and these may provide important theoretical bases and therapeutic tools to break through the existing bottleneck of essential hypertension. In this review, we demonstrated important a… Show more

“…Concurring with aging, arterial stiffness is a type of inflammatory lesion of the artery, which can make the arterial wall thick, and make the lumen narrow ( 35 ). The most important causes of arterial stiffness are high blood pressure, hyperlipidemia and smoking.…”

“…Elevated SBP is a major risk factor of coronary heart disease and cerebrovascular accidents 19 ; its pathophysiology is mainly related to decreased vascular elasticity and compliance due to atherosclerosis and, secondarily, to water‐sodium retention. 20 , 21 There is evidence that the stimulation of acupoints can reduce vascular inflammation by repairing vascular endothelial cells and water‐sodium retention by improving renal hemodynamics 22 , 23 ; therefore, we expected that moxibustion would have an SBP‐lowering effect and selected SBP as the primary outcome. The effect direction of moxibustion on SBP in our RCT is consistent with the previous systematic review, 15 with a greater mean reduction in SBP in this study (−10.57 mmHg) than in the systematic review (−7.85 mmHg).…”

“…Essential hypertension, a predominant contributor to global morbidity and mortality (7), has witnessed an incremental prevalence in adults, surpassing 30 % post-2010 (8). Effective interventions are urgently needed in low-income countries due to their anticipated heavy burden of hypertension on healthcare systems (9), and essential hypertension is responsible for more than 90% of all reported cases of high blood pressure (10). Recognized established risk factors for hypertension include a diet that is high in sodium but low in potassium (11), lack of physical activity (12), and obesity (13).…”
