Advances in myelin imaging with potential clinical application to pediatric imaging

Abstract: White matter development and myelination are critical processes in neurodevelopment. Myelinated white matter facilitates the rapid and coordinated brain messaging required for higher-order cognitive and behavioral processing. Whereas several neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis are associated with gross white matter damage and demyelination, other disorders such as epilepsy may involve altered myelination in the efferent or afferent white matter pathways adjoining epileptic foci. Current M… Show more

“…Restriction leads to nutritional deficiencies and hormonal changes, additional factors that alter brain function (80). Neurodevelopment is critically dependent on myelination (81, 82), and that process may be impacted with the presence of an eating disorder in adolescence and young adulthood. The size of the anterior Cing, a brain region fundamental in self-processing, decreases with the severity of starvation in AN (83).…”

“…An even newer technique for measuring myelin concentration using multicomponent-driven equilibrium single-pulse observation of T1 and T2 (McDESPOT) may also play an important role in evaluating the white matter of patients with epilepsy, especially pediatric patients. 18 This technique compares the myelin concentration of the subject with an age-matched control database and highlights differences. These differences are then presented visually for examination and can be used to focus attention on the cortical area of interest (►Fig.…”

“…Fludeoxyglucose F18 positron emission tomography ( 18 F-FDG PET) imaging is based on the principle that metabolic activity of cortex is reflected in the rate of uptake of glucose. 18 F-FDG is a glucose analogue with an attached positron emitting fluoride atom. Imaging may be performed in either the ictal or interictal period.…”
