Advances in mass spectrometry-based metabolomics for investigation of metabolites

Abstract: Metabolomics is the systematic study of all the metabolites present within a biological system, which consists of a mass of molecules, having a variety of physical and chemical properties and existing over an extensive dynamic range in biological samples. Diverse analytical techniques are needed to achieve higher coverage of metabolites. The application of mass spectrometry (MS) in metabolomics has increased exponentially since the discovery and development of electrospray ionization and matrixassisted laser d… Show more

“…Metabolomics approach plays a key role in researching the metabolic disorder-related diseases (Zhang et al, 2013d;Zhang et al, 2014e;Zhang et al, 2015b;Sun et al, 2015;Zhao et al, 2016;Chu et al, 2016;Song et al, 2017;Ren et al, 2018;Qiu et al, 2020), discovery and identification of biomarkers (Zhang et al, 2014f) and treatment (Wang et al, 2012;Liang et al, 2015;Zhang et al, 2016b;Zhao et al, 2017;Liu et al, 2018;Sun et al, 2019;Wu et al, 2019;Qiu et al, 2020). Many biomarkers are being discovered for better understanding of metabolic mechanisms (Ma et al, 2016; and evaluating the efficacy diseases (Chu et al, 2015a;Chu et al, 2015b;Zhang et al, 2017).…”

“…In addition, CE has poor migration time reproducibility and a lack of reference libraries, which may only be partially overcome by the prediction of migration time [103,104]. However, CE has some distinct advantages over other instruments employed for metabolomics: mainly the facts that it utilizes low separation volume, which is particularly suitable for the study of biological fluids in small experimental animals, and operates under a homogeneous separation environment [105].…”

“…MS techniques that do not require a separation step e.g. MALDI (matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization) MS are widely used in salivary proteomics and while such approaches offer promise in metabolomics of other substances, this is not yet common in saliva [27]. Several reviews have been written about the relative advantages and limitations of different MS and NMR platforms in metabolomics [28][29][30][31][32][33].…”
