Advances in corrosion protection by organic coatings: What we know and what we would like to know

Abstract: This paper provides a brief overview of current knowledge in how protective coatings work and poses questions that we need to answer in order to develop a more predictive model for coating performance.

“…Adhesion performance is one of the most important properties of protective coatings [57][58][59][60]. Therefore, in this study, the ASTM cross-cut tape test was performed to evaluate the effect of Gr addition on the adhesion of the composite coating to steel panels.…”

“…In the last few decades, several types of organic-based coatings have been developed [85], including anti-fouling paints [70,[86][87][88][89][90][91][92][93][94], composites and nano-coatings [94][95][96], self-healing coatings [97][98][99][100][101][102][103][104][105][106][107], and hybrid sol-gel materials [98,[108][109][110][111][112][113][114][115][116][117][118][119][120][121] among others. However, as far as the authors' knowledge, very few studies were performed on OWSs using self-healing and hybrid sol-gel coatings.…”

“…The ability of an organic-based coating to absorb moisture or allow it to diffuse through the metallic substrate may compromise the coating performance. For example, blistering of an organic-based coating may occur due to the presence of water under the coating (water uptake) [85].…”

“…The buried pipelines were arranged in a crisscross pattern, and this would cause fire and explosion once they start to corrode and leak; that would threaten the personal safety and cause environmental pollution. The anticorrosion coating of the buried pipeline often had disbonded area with broken open holiday due to the mechanical damage, aging and degradation, cathodic disbondment, and other reasons in the process of pipeline installation and using [6][7][8]. It formed the special corrosive environment between the anticorrosion coating and pipeline surface, and the moisture, the soluble ion like CO 2 and O 2 and other corrosive media in the soil got into the disbonded area through the holiday; that caused the corrosion of the metal under the disbonded coating [9][10][11].…”
