Advances in Cellulose-Based Packaging Films for Food Products

Abstract: Cellulose and its derivatives can be used to manufacture packaging film materials with versatile properties as alternatives to petroleum-based films. This chapter covers the recent trends and advancements in cellulose-based films for food materials. The chapter starts with the introduction of traditional and novel cellulose structures relevant to film-making properties including cellulose fibers, filaments, nano-fibrils, crystalline cellulose, and other traditional cellulose derivatives. The relevant cross-lin… Show more

“…The application of bacterial cellulose (BC) for fabrication of antibacterial and biodegradable packaging composite films has been reviewed by Jang et al These BC-based composite films are usually prepared by casting a suspension of BC in aqueous medium in the presence of other additives to endow the desired properties to the films. Kaya and Yucel in a book chapter have briefly explained some of the advantages of cellulose for its utilization in food packaging . For instance, the different methods for physical and chemical modification of cellulose for tuning its properties have been explained.…”
